AirVPN review

AirVPN sells three subscription tiers on a single base VPN account. The 1-month plan lists at $7.08 per month and renews monthly with no commitment. The 1-year plan drops the effective rate to $4.08 per month, billed once a year. The 3-year plan is the headline play at $2.75 per month billed up front, paired with the lowest published long-term rate for a consumer VPN with owned servers and activist ownership.

Every paid plan is backed by a 30-day money-back window. AirVPN also sells dedicated IPs and port forwarding as add-ons on top of the base subscription; the add-ons are recurring. AirVPN offers unlimited and free server switches, no maximum speed limit (server load permitting), and a kill switch on every major platform.

Eddie is AirVPN's proprietary open-source desktop client, named after a contributor. Eddie supports OpenVPN, WireGuard, OpenVPN over SSH, OpenVPN over SSL, and OpenVPN over Tor. The multi-layer obfuscation options are designed for restrictive networks that block standard VPN protocols: each layer adds another wrapper that makes the resulting traffic on the wire look like a different application.

Eddie is open-source on GitHub, which means the code that runs locally can be inspected by anyone. The client is built for power users who want fine-grained control over the connection: server selection by load, port, or supported protocol; route-through options for double-hop setups; real-time bandwidth monitoring; and a kill switch on every platform. AirVPN is not the consumer-friendly choice; it is the power-user choice.

AirVPN operates 200+ owned high-performance servers in 23 countries. The smaller fleet is the trade for owned infrastructure: every server is operated under AirVPN's direct control, with no third-party hosting partners. The country list covers the major regions (US, UK, Germany, France, Japan, Canada, Netherlands, Sweden) plus a smaller set of secondary markets.

AirVPN has no maximum speed limit; throughput depends only on the server load. Unlimited server switches are free on every plan, and the network status page shows real-time load per server. The trade-off versus larger competitors is country coverage: 23 countries is well below the 90+ to 105+ that mid-tier providers cover, so users who need an exit in a less-common country will hit gaps.

AirVPN is headquartered in Italy, which is a member of the 14-Eyes intelligence-sharing alliance. AirVPN is run by activists who flag the 14-Eyes membership openly on the site and who were early advocates for net neutrality and against mass surveillance. The activist posture is a differentiator for buyers who want a privacy-first operator with a published stance on internet freedom.

AirVPN does not have an independent audit on public record as of 2025. The no-traffic-logs policy is advertised and supported by the owned-server infrastructure, but has not been verified by a third-party auditor. AirVPN can unblock Netflix in our latest checks, including US and UK libraries. Coverage of other streaming services is best-effort rather than guaranteed. AirVPN does not market streaming unblock as a primary feature, so users may need to try a few cities before landing on one that works for a specific catalog. The apps do not label streaming servers by service.

AirVPN is torrent-friendly by default: P2P traffic is allowed on every server, the kill switch is enabled by default, and port forwarding is supported on dedicated IP endpoints for an additional fee. The owned-server infrastructure means no third-party hosting can be compelled to log user activity. Combined with the no-traffic-logs policy and the activist ownership, AirVPN is a clean answer for privacy-focused torrenting.

AirVPN fits four reader profiles. First, power users who want a configurable VPN client with multi-layer obfuscation (OpenVPN over SSH, SSL, or Tor) and a kill switch on every platform. Second, torrent users who want owned server infrastructure, port forwarding on dedicated IP endpoints, and an activist-owned operator. Third, users behind restrictive networks who need the OpenVPN-over-Tor fallback. Fourth, buyers who want a small independent operator with a published stance on net neutrality and internet freedom.

AirVPN is a weaker fit if you want a polished consumer app with a map-based server picker, if you want the largest server fleet (PIA at 35,000+), if you want unlimited simultaneous devices (Surfshark), or if you want a deep audit record on the public record (ExpressVPN 12, ProtonVPN 6, TunnelBear 8). For a privacy-first VPN with a flat price and open-source clients, Mullvad is the closer neighbor.

• ProtonVPN - the audited alternative with a free tier. Proton is based in Switzerland (outside 14-Eyes), ships open-source apps, and offers a free plan plus a paid tier with Secure Core multi-hop. Stronger audit count (6 vs 0), broader feature set, more visible on consumer comparison lists.
• NordVPN - the premium alternative. NordVPN caps simultaneous devices at 10, ships Double VPN, Onion Over VPN, Meshnet, and Threat Protection, plus five independent audits and a Panama jurisdiction outside 14-Eyes. Higher headline price, longer-term commitment, broader feature set.
